Following successful, standing ovation-inspiring weekends of Esther’s Follies guest performances, critically acclaimed nationally touring sketch comedy troupe The Latino Comedy Project (LCP) returns to Austin’s historic Esther’s Pool Theater to ring in the New Year with "¡Loco Año Nuevo!," an encore presentation of its cutting-edge political/pop-culture satire. If you missed them last time, here is another opportunity to see the troupe’s hilarious sketch revue, including all-new sketches and videos from their latest show "AlienNation".
With multimedia shows performed mostly in English with a touch of Spanglish, the LCP’s dazzling satire spans the comedic gamut with fast-paced, high-energy live sketches and elaborate video parodies. The LCP’s hilarious show takes on an array of other ripe comedic targets, promising a whirlwind ride through the absurdities of American politics and pop-culture.
In "Get on a Truck", the LCP's secret for producing such great comedy on the cheap is revealed: We send comedy scouts to day labor sites! Check out the LCP's take on Apple's Mac vs. PC ads ("Mex vs. B.C. [Born Citizen]"), Bratz dolls, the Mexican "300" and amateurish local "adult education" commercials ("Vosotros Polytechnic"). Attend the "2007 Annual Police Brutality Video Awards," and visit a racially themed college costume party where the tables are turned on the usual perpetrators.
Presented first in September at Austin's new Mexican American Cultural Center, the LCP's newest sketch show "AlienNation" was greeted with rave reviews and enthusiastic audiences. In its review, the Austin American-Statesman said, "This troupe is at its best -- and most comically unforgiving -- as a whole, when they're ricocheting back and forth between live sketches and hysterically produced video segments."
An immigration-themed spoof of the film "300" produced for "AlienNation" became a breakout viral video hit on YouTube.com, where it has amassed more than 1.3 million views. The LCP's series of Mac/PC parodies - "Mex vs. B.C. (Born Citizen)" -- have also received over a million views on the site. Since August alone, the LCP's YouTube videos have received nearly three million views from viewers worldwide.
The LCP, called "hilarious" and "murderously funny" by the San Francisco Chronicle, has been featured at international Sketch Festivals in Vancouver, Chicago and Seattle, and has performed with Carlos Mencia, Fred Willard, Gabriel Iglesias, Pablo Francisco and Rob Corddry of "The Daily Show," among others. The LCP's comedy videos have been featured at international film festivals and on nationally syndicated programs seen in over 50 million households from coast to coast.
After two years of touring the nation, the LCP has been working hard to bring its unique, take-no-prisoners take on the absurdities of pop culture and politics back to hometown audiences. "¡Loco Año Nuevo!" is a night of hilarious, high-energy comedy by a troupe celebrating its 10th year of bringing audience members to tears of laughter.
The Latino Comedy Project writers and performers are: LCP Artistic Director Adrian Villegas, Sandy Avila, Guillermo De Leon, Omar L. Gallaga, Raul Garza, Karinna Perez, Mical Trejo, Danu Uribe and Nick Walker.
Come see "¡Loco Año Nuevo!": Because in Spanglish, no one can understand you laugh.
