| Omar
L. Gallaga got the acting bug when he helped government officials transport
a small monkey from the wilds of Africa to a lab in Virginia. The
cage broke, the monkey tore a chunk of Gallaga's arm, and the rest is theatrical
history. Without much acting experience and even less ability, Gallaga stumbled perilously through productions of "Grease," "Wait Until Dark," "Dracula," and "I Hate Hamlet" before attending the University of Oklahoma to get his B.A. in Journalism/News Communication. As a reporter, he met celebrities like Ice T., Michael Moore, Robert Bork and The Guy Who Played Greg Brady (his legally changed name) and did Serious Journalism like covering the Oklahoma City bombing and working for the Wall Street Journal. Graduation and an old Honda Civic brought him to Austin where he got a job with the Austin American-Statesman newspaper where he writes and edits for the entertainment section. For the Latino Comedy Project, Gallaga started out as a contributing writer but through bribery, trickery and deceit, wormed his way into the cast. In Gallaga's own words, writing and performing in the project has been a dream come true: "When I started out (with the group), I thought 'wow.' Then, I thought, 'I'm hungry. Think I'll go to the snack machine.' Later on, after my Payday bar, I thought, 'wow' again and then I lost my train of thought. I know I'm gushing, but my feelings run that deep." When asked about Gallaga's talent for subversive comedy writing, noted satirist Tom Wolfe commented, "Who?" You can find his writing on Web sites like MightyBigTV.com and Fametracker.com. He has his own online journal/entertainment site, Terribly Happy.com, which he updates pretty regularly. |
